What To Expect

After breakfast, depart from Gondar and drive north to Debark, the headquarters of Simien Mountains National Park. Complete the park registration formalities and meet your park ranger, scout, trekking crew and mule handlers before continuing to Buyit Ras, the official starting point of the trek.

Begin your first hike through rolling highlands and dramatic escarpments offering magnificent panoramic views across the Simien massif. The trail follows the edge of towering cliffs where Gelada baboons are commonly seen grazing peacefully. Continue trekking to Sankaber Camp (3,250 m), one of the park's most scenic campsites overlooking spectacular mountain valleys and cliffs.

Driving: ~2 hrs to Debark & 1 hr to Buyit Ras • Trekking: 3–4 hrs (~8 km) • Meals: Lunch & Dinner • Overnight: Camping at Sankaber Camp

After breakfast, begin one of the most scenic sections of the trek. The trail descends through spectacular escarpments before reaching the breathtaking Jinbar Waterfall, which plunges nearly 500 metres into a dramatic gorge below.

Cross the Jinbar River before ascending through beautiful giant heath forests and open Afro-alpine meadows rich with endemic flora. Keep an eye out for Klipspringers, Lammergeyers, Verreaux's Eagles and numerous endemic bird species soaring overhead. Arrive at Geech Camp (3,600 m), beautifully situated on an expansive mountain plateau with sweeping sunset views.

Trekking: 6–7 hrs (~14 km) • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner • Overnight: Camping at Geech Camp

Today's trek is considered one of the highlights of the Simien Mountains. Depart early from Geech Camp and hike across open alpine grasslands toward the famous viewpoint of Imet Gogo (3,926 m). From the summit, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views stretching across countless mountain ridges, deep valleys and sheer cliffs.

Continue trekking along dramatic escarpments before descending toward the impressive Siha Gorge and then ascending to Chenek Camp (3,620 m). The Chenek area is renowned as one of the best places to observe the endangered Walia ibex in its natural habitat. Lucky trekkers may also spot the elusive Ethiopian wolf.

Trekking: 7–8 hrs (~15 km) • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner • Overnight: Camping at Chenek Camp

Following breakfast, enjoy a final morning trek around the spectacular Chenek escarpment before ascending toward Bwahit Pass (4,200 m), offering magnificent views across the Simien Mountains National Park.

After time for photographs and enjoying the stunning scenery, descend to the pickup point where your vehicle awaits. Drive back through Debark before continuing to Gondar, arriving in the afternoon with unforgettable memories of Ethiopia's most spectacular mountain wilderness.

Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is the 4-day Simien trek?

It is a challenging highland trek with 3–8 hours of walking per day at altitudes between 3,250 m and 3,926 m, reaching the Imet Gogo viewpoint. A good level of fitness helps, but the pace is steady and mules carry your main luggage.

Where do we camp each night?

Three nights of camping: Sankaber (3,250 m), Geech (3,600 m) and Chenek (3,620 m). All camps use quality tents, mattresses, a dining tent and a cook providing full-board meals.

Will I see the Walia ibex?

The Chenek area on day three is the best place in the park to see the endangered Walia ibex, and sightings are common. You may also encounter Gelada baboons throughout and, with luck, the elusive Ethiopian wolf.

What is the best season for this trek?

October to March offers the clearest skies and best trekking conditions. The trek operates year-round, with July–August being the wettest months.
