What To Expect
Your journey begins with a two-hour drive from Mekele to the Giant Sycamore Tree Camp. En route, you will visit Abuna Abraham, a stunning rock-hewn church that requires a short but rewarding climb. The effort is well worth it, as you will be rewarded with breathtaking views and intricate rock carvings. In the evening, enjoy a magical night camping beneath the largest sycamore tree in the region, home to exotic bird species.
Trekking Time: 4-5 hours | Overnight: Camping under the sycamore tree
Wake up to a peaceful sunrise and have breakfast under the ancient sycamore. Today’s trek takes you through a beautiful valley and up Mountain Kemmer, the highest peak in the Gheralta range, offering 360° panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and desert plateaus. Along the way, you will pass by a hidden rock hermitage, before descending into Agoza Village, where you will set up camp in the local school grounds. This is a great opportunity to interact with friendly villagers and experience their way of life.
Trekking Time: 7 hours | Overnight: Camping in Agoza Village
Begin the day with a scenic hike up to Abuna Gebre Michael, a magnificent rock church carved deep into the mountainside and adorned with ancient frescos. After exploring the church, follow a narrow natural defile cut through the rock, leading to your Koraro campsite, located in the lee of a massive natural cave. The evening will be filled with a traditional barbecue, local beer, and a lively campfire celebration with music and dancing.

Today, you will explore two of Gheralta’s most famous rock-hewn churches:
- Abuna Yemata Guh:This requires a thrilling climb with ropes and harnesses at one section, leading to an incredible church perched high on a cliffside, offering dramatic views.
- Mariam Korkor & Daniel Korkor:These ancient churches, carved into the cliffs, are considered among the oldest and finest rock churches in Ethiopia.
After the trek, you will camp on the top of the Mariam Korkor mountain, alongside monks who still reside there today, enjoying one of the most spiritually enriching nights under the stars.

Wake up early to witness a breathtaking sunrise over the Gheralta Mountains before having breakfast. Descend from Mariam Korkor with a two-hour trek, followed by a two-hour drive back to Mekele Airport. Catch your flight back to Addis Ababa, marking the end of an unforgettable trekking adventure.
