Bishoftu Crater Lakes Day Trip
Overview
Discover the breathtaking beauty of Ethiopia’s Rift Valley on this curated day excursion to the resort town of Bishoftu (formerly Debre Zeyit). This Bishoftu Crater Lakes Day Trip is professionally designed for travelers seeking a serene escape just 45 km southeast of Addis Ababa. Home to five spectacular volcanic crater lakes—Bishoftu, Hora, Babogaya, Kuriftu, and Magersa—the area is a haven for birdwatchers, photography enthusiasts, and those looking for lakeside relaxation. From exploring the ancient rim of Lake Hora to enjoying luxury spa treatments or traditional boat rides, this Bishoftu Crater Lakes Day Trip provides the perfect blend of natural wonder and modern Ethiopian leisure.
What To Expect
Departing Addis Ababa at 8:30 AM, we take a short, comfortable drive to Bishoftu. Our first stop is Lake Hora, one of the largest and deepest crater lakes in the area. Known for its abundant birdlife—including pelicans, herons, and kingfishers—we take a guided walk along the rim and a traditional boat trip to explore the shoreline. This lake is also culturally significant as a site for the annual Irreecha thanksgiving festival of the Oromo people.
For lunch, we head to a premier lakeside resort overlooking Lake Babogaya or Lake Kuriftu. Enjoy a variety of Ethiopian and international dishes while taking in the tranquil views of the turquoise waters. After lunch, you have time for leisure: choose between a relaxing spa treatment, a swim in a resort pool, or a peaceful stroll through the lush gardens that line the volcanic cliffs.
In the afternoon, we visit the panoramic viewpoints of Lake Bishoftu, arguably the most iconic of the craters due to its perfectly circular shape and steep forested walls. We also visit a local roastery for a final Ethiopian coffee experience by the water. After a full day of Rift Valley discovery, we begin our short return journey, arriving back in Addis Ababa by 5:30 PM.
