What To Expect

Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa – City Tour

Upon arrival at Bole International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our professional guide and transferred to your hotel in Addis Ababa. Depending on your arrival time, enjoy a half-day or full-day guided city tour of Ethiopia’s vibrant capital. Highlights include a visit to the Ethnographic Museum, which offers insight into Ethiopia’s diverse ethnic cultures, and the renowned National Museum of Ethiopia, home to the famous 3.5-million-year-old fossil “Lucy.” You will also explore the historic Holy Trinity Cathedral, final resting place of Emperor Haile Selassie, experience the bustling atmosphere of Mercato, Africa’s largest open-air market, and enjoy panoramic views of the city from the scenic Entoto Hills.

Day 2: Addis Ababa – Arba Minch (453 km, ~8.5 hrs drive)

Today, depart Addis Ababa and drive south through Ethiopia’s picturesque Rift Valley, rich in landscapes and history. En route, visit the prehistoric archaeological site of Melka Kunture, continue to the rock-hewn church of Adadi Maryam, and explore Tiya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its ancient stelae. Arrive in Arba Minch in the late afternoon and check into your hotel.

Day 3: Arba Minch – Dorze Village & Lake Chamo

In the morning, drive to the highland village of Chencha, home of the Dorze people, renowned for their impressive beehive-shaped houses and traditional weaving techniques. Experience daily village life and observe the preparation of their staple food made from the false banana plant. In the afternoon, return to Arba Minch for a scenic boat excursion on Lake Chamo, where you can observe massive Nile crocodiles, hippos, and a rich variety of birdlife in their natural habitat.

Day 4: Arba Minch – Turmi (277 km, ~5.5 hrs drive)

Continue south into the heart of the Omo Valley, passing through territories inhabited by the Konso, Tsamay, Arbore, and Hamar communities. Visit an Arbore village to learn about their pastoral traditions and later explore a Hamar village near Turmi, famous for distinctive hairstyles, body decorations, and rich cultural identity. If timing allows, you may witness the traditional Hamar bull-jumping ceremony, a significant rite of passage for young men.

Day 5: Turmi – Dassanech Village & Hamar Market

After breakfast, drive to Omerate, located along the Omo River. Cross the river by traditional canoe and visit a Dassanech village to gain insight into their unique lifestyle shaped by the river’s seasonal cycles. Return to Turmi in the afternoon to experience the lively Hamar market, where local tribes gather for trade, social interaction, and cultural exchange.

Day 6: Turmi – Konso (195 km, ~4 hrs drive)

Enjoy a short morning nature walk around Turmi, offering opportunities to spot black-and-white colobus monkeys and various bird species. After lunch, drive to the UNESCO-listed Konso region, famous for its ancient terraced farming system, fortified stone villages, and the symbolic Waga wooden stelae erected in honor of respected community members and warriors.

Day 7: Konso – Yirgalem (280 km, ~5 hrs drive)

Travel north into Ethiopia’s lush southern highlands to Yirgalem, located in the heart of the Sidama coffee-growing region. Check in at the charming Aregash Lodge, an eco-lodge surrounded by coffee plantations and built in traditional Sidamo architectural style. Spend the afternoon relaxing, enjoying organic meals, or taking gentle nature walks around the lodge grounds.

Day 8: Yirgalem – Addis Ababa & Departure (315 km, ~5 hrs drive)

Begin the return journey to Addis Ababa, stopping en route at the bustling Hawassa Fish Market to observe local fishing traditions, and later at Lake Ziway for birdwatching and lunch. Upon arrival in Addis Ababa, enjoy day-use hotel facilities before an evening farewell dinner at a traditional cultural restaurant featuring Ethiopian cuisine, live music, and dance performances. After dinner, transfer to Bole International Airport for your international departure.
