What To Expect

Your 5-Day Danakil Depression and Lalibela Tour begins with a flight from Addis Ababa to Semera, Flight number ET110(06:45-08:10). Upon arrival, you will embark on a five-to-six-hour drive through the Afar region to Hamed Ela. Along the way, you will stop at the stunning Lake Afdera, a natural salt lake with warm waters, perfect for a refreshing swim. Here, you will also enjoy lunch while soaking in the surreal landscape.

As the journey continues, you will head towards the camping village of Hamed Ela, a gateway to the Danakil Depression’s incredible geological wonders. In the evening, you will visit Lake Asale, a vast expanse of salt flats, where the setting sun casts a golden glow over the crystalline formations. The tranquil surroundings provide a perfect opportunity to relax with a glass of wine or beer while taking in the breathtaking scenery.

Overnight: Open-air camping at Hamed Ela

After breakfast, your 5-Day Danakil Depression and Lalibela Tour continues to the fascinating Dalol Depression, 125 meters below sea level. This unique region is renowned for its striking, multicolored mineral formations and hydrothermal reactions. You will explore the surreal landscapes of Dalol, visit Lake Assal, and explore the salt canyon.

Following Dalol, you will drive towards Erta Ale, a shield volcano and one of Ethiopia’s most alluring attractions. The journey takes you across solidified lava fields and desert sands, passing through small Afar settlements along the way.

Upon arrival at the campsite, you will have an early dinner before embarking on a one-hour trek to the volcano’s summit. Under the dark night sky, you will witness the hypnotic display of molten lava churning within the crater. After spending time at the rim, you will return to the campsite to sleep under the stars.

Overnight: Camping near Erta Ale Volcano

Before dawn, visit the boiling lava lake once more to watch the fiery glow against the early morning sky. After breakfast, you will begin your journey back to Semera. This transit marks the midpoint of your 5-Day Danakil Depression and Lalibela Tour as you transition from the desert heat to the mountain air.

Upon arrival at Semera Airport, take your return flight to Addis Ababa on Ethiopian Airlines flight ET165 (05:45 PM – 07:00 PM). Upon arrival in Addis Ababa, transfer to your hotel for overnight stay.

Early in the morning, transfer to the airport for your flight to Lalibela on Ethiopian Airlines flight ET122 (06:25 AM – 07:40 AM). Upon arrival and breakfast, begin exploring the remarkable rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, one of Ethiopia’s most important religious and historical sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You will begin your tour of the first group of six rock-hewn churches, including Bete Medhane Alem, the largest monolithic church in the world. These 12th-century structures are carved directly into the red volcanic tuff and remain active places of worship. In the afternoon, you will visit the second group of churches, culminating in the most famous of them all: Bete Giyorgis (the Church of St. George). Carved in the shape of a cross, it stands as a masterpiece of Ethiopian engineering. You will witness the intricate tunnels and trenches that connect these sacred sites, followed by a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony in the evening.

Overnight: Hotel in Lalibela

On the final day of your 5-Day Danakil Depression and Lalibela Tour, you may have the opportunity to visit a local market or the monastery of Ne’akuto Le’ab, located just outside the town. This morning offers a final chance to soak in the atmosphere of this medieval holy city. This morning offers a final chance to experience the atmosphere of this sacred medieval town before transferring to Lalibela Airport for your return flight to Addis Ababa on Ethiopian Airlines flight ET121 (01:30 PM – 02:45 PM).
