25 Days North Ethiopia, Danakil, Harrar, Omo Valley & Bale mountains

We depart Harar for a scenic drive through the Chercher Mountains, stopping at sprawling coffee plantations and chat fields that characterize the region’s agriculture.

In the afternoon, we visit Awash National Park to witness the dramatic Awash River Gorge and its resident birdlife. We then continue to the tranquil Doho Lodge, where you can unwind in natural, palm-lined thermal pools under the stars. Overnight: Doho Lodge.

After a relaxed morning drive from Doho to Semera town through the rift valley plains, you will visit Allolobad Geysers on the way. These are a stunning geothermal marvel known as “the small yellow stones of Afar,” and the site features vibrant, multi-coloured hot pools and regular eruptions. Overnight will be in Afar Yangudi hotel.

We depart Semera by 4WD, traveling into the heart of the Danakil Depression. We stop at the salt lake of Afdera for lunch and a refreshing float in its buoyant waters.

In the late afternoon, we reach the base of Erta Ale. Following an early dinner, we trek to the caldera to witness the spectacular glow of one of the world’s few continuously active lava lakes. Witnessing the molten earth under the desert stars is a highlight of any Ethiopia tour. Overnight camping near the crater rim under the sky!

Witness a pre-dawn sunrise over the lava lake before descending the volcano back to base camp for breakfast. We then drive through the shifting sands and salt pans to reach the remote Afar settlement of Hamad Ela.

Along the way you will enjoy the deserted landscapes. We conclude the day with a dramatic sunset over the vast salt flats of Lake Asale. Overnight will be in Hamedela under the sky!

This morning, we explore the otherworldly Dallol, a hydrothermal field of neon-colored acidic pools and mineral formations. Situated 125m below sea level, it is one of the most geologically active and hottest places on Earth.

After exploring the salt canyons and sulfur springs, we leave the desert lowlands and ascend the escarpment into the Tigrayan highlands, arriving in the vibrant city of Mekele for overnight in Amdna hotel.

We drive into the stunning Gheralta region, famous for its towering sandstone spires. Today’s cultural exploration includes the rock-hewn masterpieces of Abraha Atsbeha, Wukro Chirkos, and the Medhane Alem Kesho churches.

The ancient architecture and serene mountain settings provide a spiritual introduction to the Historic North. Overnight: Vission hotel Hawzein.

For the adventurous, the morning offers an optional trek to Abune Yemata Guh, a spectacular cliffside church. We then pass through the historic Adwa Battlefield, where Ethiopia defended its independence in 1896.

Our day concludes with a visit to the ancient Temple of Yeha, dating back to the 7th century BC, before arriving in Axum. Overnight: Atrons Hotel.

We spend a full day in the holiest city of Ethiopia. We visit the towering Obelisks of Axum, the Queen of Sheba’s Palace, and the Church of St. Mary of Zion—the reputed home of the Ark of the Covenant.

The archaeological museum provides deep context into Axum’s significance as one of the four great empires of the ancient world. Overnight: Atrons Hotel.

Today features one of Ethiopia’s most scenic drives as we cross the Tekeze River Gorge to reach the Simien Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In the late afternoon, we take a short walk to encounter friendly Gelada Baboons, often referred to as “Bleeding Heart Monkeys,” grazing in large family groups. Overnight: Simien Lodge.

We enjoy a morning trek to the spectacular Jinbar Waterfalls, which drop vertically into a deep chasm. The mountain vistas here are among the most dramatic in Africa.

After taking in the views, we descend from the highlands and drive to the imperial city of Gondar, the “Camelot of Africa.” Overnight: Gondar Hills Resort.

Returning to Gondar, we explore the Royal Enclosure (Fasil Ghebbi), a UNESCO site containing the medieval castles of Ethiopian Emperors.

We also visit the Debre Birhan Selassie Church, renowned for its stunning “Angel Face” ceiling frescoes. A farewell lunch at the famous Four Sisters Restaurant provides a taste of authentic Ethiopian cuisine. Overnight: Gondar Hills Resort.

A short flight (ET-122, departure @09:55 am) brings us to Lalibela, the “New Jerusalem.” We begin our exploration of the first group of rock-hewn churches, marveling at the engineering required to carve these structures downward into solid volcanic rock.

The day culminates at the iconic, cross-shaped Church of St. George (Bet Giyorgis). Overnight: Top Twelve hotel.

In the morning, we visit the bustling Lalibela Market to witness traditional trade. Afterward, you may choose to hike to the mountain monastery of Asheton Maryam or take a scenic drive to the cave church of Yemrehanna Kristos.

The afternoon is dedicated to the second group of churches, exploring the interconnected tunnels and spiritual atmosphere of this sacred site. Overnight: Top Twelve hotel.

We fly back to Addis Ababa (ET-121, departure @13:30 pm). We visit the National Museum to meet “Lucy,” our 3.2-million-year-old ancestor, explore the grand Merkato market, and take in the panoramic view of Addis from Mount Entoto. Overnight will be in Addis in Aya hotel.

You fly back to Addis Ababa for your southward flight to Jinka (ET-271 departure @12:05p.m), the gateway to the South Omo Valley.

In the afternoon, we visit the South Omo Research Center and Museum to gain deep anthropological insights into the diverse ethnic groups we will encounter, followed by a walk through the local Ari village. Overnight will be in Eco Omo lodge.

An early morning drive takes us into Mago National Park to meet the Mursi people. Globally recognized for the elaborate clay lip plates worn by the women, the Mursi are a fascinating nomadic community with deep ancestral traditions.

In the afternoon, we drive toward Turmi, the heartland of the Hamar people, passing through the scenic landscapes of the Great Rift Valley. Overnight in Buska lodge.

We travel further south to Omorate, situated near the Kenyan border. We cross the Omo River by traditional dugout canoe to visit the Dassanech tribe, observing their unique semi-nomadic village life and resilient pastoralist traditions.

Returning to Turmi in the afternoon, we visit a Hamar village. If scheduled, we may have the rare opportunity to witness a sacred bull-jumping ceremony, a vital rite of passage for young Hamar men. Overnight in Buska lodge.

In the morning, we visit the Karo tribe at Korcho village, perched on a cliff overlooking the Omo River. The Karo are masters of elaborate body painting and ritual adornment.

We then drive to Konso, a UNESCO World Heritage site. We explore their ancient stone-walled fortified villages and learn about their unique social structures and “Waga” funerary statues before checking into Kanta lodge for overnight.

On our final day in the deep south, we drive to Arba Minch for a private boat trip on Lake Chamo. Here, you will encounter massive Nile crocodiles and hippos up close.

In the afternoon, you will visit the Dorze village, perched high in the Chencha Mountains. You will witness their unique bamboo beehive huts and learn about their world-renowned weaving traditions and unique local cuisine made from Enset. Overnight in Arba Minch in Haile resort.

We journey north to the lakeside city of Awassa. The highlight of the visit is the famous fish market, where local fishermen bring in their morning catch amidst a flurry of activity and spectacular lakeside birdlife, including marabou storks and pelicans.

Enjoy a relaxing afternoon by the shore of Lake Awassa, soaking in the tropical atmosphere of one of Ethiopia’s most beautiful Rift Valley cities. Overnight at Haile Resort.

We depart for the world-renowned Bale Mountains National Park. Our first stop is the park headquarters at Dinsho, where we take a guided walk through the juniper forests.

This area is excellent for spotting endemic mammals such as the Mountain Nyala and Menelik’s Bushbuck, as well as several highland bird species. The crisp mountain air and ancient forests provide a stark contrast to the lowlands. Overnight at Nurobe Hotel.

We spend a full day exploring the high-altitude Sanetti Plateau, the best place in the world to see the rarest canid on Earth: the Ethiopian Wolf.

As we traverse this Afro-alpine moorland, we will marvel at the unique flora, such as the Giant Lobelia, and summit Mount Tulu Dimtu. At 4,377 meters, it is Ethiopia’s second-highest peak and offers breathtaking panoramic views. Overnight at Nurobe Hotel.

Drive from Bale to Langano, visiting the Ethiopian Rift Valley lakes national park of Abijatta and Shalla lakes on the way. These lakes are well known for diverse wildlife and birds, and you can mainly spot masses of Pelicans and Flamingos. Overnight will be in Langano Lodge.

Following a final early morning trek on the plateau to catch the sunrise, we begin our scenic drive back to the capital. We descend from the mountains through diverse ecological zones, stopping for a farewell lunch en route.

Upon arrival in Addis Ababa, you will be transferred to your hotel or directly to Bole International Airport for your international departure, marking the end of your Ethiopian expedition.
