2 Days Erta Ale Danakil Depression from Semera
Overview
Experience the raw power of nature with a 2 Day Danakil Tour, a condensed yet exhilarating journey designed to showcase the most iconic wonders of the Afar region. This adventure takes you directly to the heart of the Danakil Depression, where you’ll witness the planet’s most extreme landscapes.
The highlight of the first day is a trek to the summit of the Erta Ale volcano. You will stand before its permanent lava lake, a mesmerizing spectacle that glows with fiery intensity under the night sky, offering a rare glimpse into the Earth’s molten core.
What To Expect
Your journey begins in Semera, the capital of the Afar region. From here, you will embark on a five-hour drive towards Dodom, a small settlement located at the base of Erta Ale.
The route crosses a dramatic landscape of lava fields and sandy plains. Along the way, you will pass through traditional Afar villages and witness the harsh beauty of the environment. Upon arrival in Dodom, you will prepare for the night trek to the summit. Camels will transport your camping equipment as you hike toward the crater’s rim.
Erta Ale, the “Smoking Mountain,” features one of the world’s only permanent lava lakes. Standing at the edge of the caldera, you will witness the mesmerizing red glow of bubbling lava against the dark sky.
Overnight: Open-air camping at Erta Ale
At sunrise, you will explore the 200-meter-deep crater in the morning light. After walking the rim and viewing the unique volcanic formations, you will descend for breakfast.
The journey continues to Lake Afdera, a striking saltwater lake. You can swim in the warm, mineral-rich waters—a perfect way to refresh after the volcanic trek. You will also observe the local Afar people extracting salt using traditional methods. This salt remains a vital resource for the regional economy.
Finally, you will return to Semera for your flight or hotel drop-off. This concludes an extraordinary adventure through Ethiopia’s most unique landscapes.
