This 4-Day Danakil and Gheralta Tour offers a high-contrast journey through Northern Ethiopia’s most surreal landscapes. You will transition from the depths of the Danakil Depression to the soaring peaks of the Tigray highlands in one seamless expedition.
The adventure begins with a rugged trek to the rim of Erta Ale to witness its permanent lava lake. This is followed by an exploration of the vast salt flats and ancient camel caravans of Lake Assal, where the horizon stretches into infinity.
After witnessing the neon-colored hydrothermal fields of Dallol, the lowest point in Africa, the tour ascends into the Gheralta Mountains. Here, you will experience a thrilling technical climb to the “sky churches.” Ancient rock-hewn architecture and 15th-century frescoes await those brave enough to reach the summit.
It is an intense, immersive circuit designed for travelers seeking a mix of volcanic activity, otherworldly geology, and remote cultural history.
Your expedition begins in Mekele, where you’ll meet your 4×4 convoy and specialized Afar guides. We drive through the changing landscapes of the Afar depression, moving from paved roads to rugged lava fields. After an early dinner at the Dodom base camp, we begin the trek to the rim of Erta Ale. As darkness falls, you will stand at the edge of one of the world’s only permanent lava lakes, watching the molten earth churn below. Overnight: Camping at the Volcano Rim or base camp.
After a sunrise viewing of the caldera, we descend the volcano and drive toward the remote village of Hamed Ela. This journey takes us through the heart of the salt-mining region. In the late afternoon, we reach the vast salt flats of Lake Assal (Lake Karum). Here, you can walk on the endless white crust and witness the legendary Afar camel caravans silhouetted against a golden sunset. Overnight: Basic Camping at Hamed Ela.
We set out early for Dallol, the lowest point in Africa. This area is a riot of neon yellow, green, and orange sulfur springs and potash deposits. After exploring the “salt canyons” and the oily, bubbling Black Lake, we begin our transition from the lowlands to the highlands. We drive out of the depression, climbing the steep escarpment toward the Gheralta Mountains, arriving in the scenic town of Hawzen or at a mountain lodge by evening. Overnight: Gheralta Lodge or Vision Hotel.
Today is dedicated to the “sky churches” of Tigray. We start with a hike to Abuna Yemata Guh, a church carved into a vertical sandstone pillar. Reaching it requires a thrilling climb up a cliff face using ancient hand-holds, rewarding you with 15th-century frescoes and a staggering view of the valley below. In the afternoon, we visit the twin churches of Maryam and Daniel Korkor before driving back to Mekele for your evening flight or departure.
