What To Expect

Day 1: Mekele – Dallol – Hamed Ela

Early morning departure from Mekele by 4×4 vehicle into the Danakil Depression. Travel across dramatic desert landscapes to reach the colorful hydrothermal fields of Dallol, one of the lowest and hottest places on Earth. Explore its vibrant mineral formations, bubbling springs, and salt canyons.

Continue to Lake Asale, where you will walk across endless salt flats. In the afternoon, drive to the desert camp at Hamed Ela. Enjoy sunset views over the salt lake before dinner and stargazing in the open desert.

Overnight: Open-air camping at Hamed Ela

Day 2: Hamed Ela – Erta Ale (Volcano)

After breakfast, drive across the Afar desert towards Erta Ale Volcano, crossing vast lava fields and remote landscapes. Upon arrival at the base camp, enjoy an early dinner before beginning your evening hike to the summit.

Under the night sky, witness the spectacular lava lake glowing inside the crater — one of the most incredible natural sights on Earth. After time at the crater rim, descend back to camp.

Overnight: Camping near Erta Ale Volcano

Day 3: Erta Ale – Mekele

Before sunrise, visit the lava crater one final time for sunrise photography. After breakfast, begin the return journey to Mekele, crossing the vast desert plains of the Afar region.
