What To Expect

Day 1: Hawzen – Gheralta Mountains – Koraro Village

he 3-day trek from Gheralta to the Agame Highlands begins in the town of Hawzen with a short transfer to the base of the Gheralta Mountains. From there, you hike through dramatic sandstone landscapes, passing stone-built villages and terraced fields. Along the way, there’s the option to visit one of the region’s famed rock-hewn churches, such as Abuna Yemata Guh or Maryam Korkor, perched high on cliff faces. The day ends in the remote village of Koraro, where you stay in a local guesthouse and enjoy a traditional Ethiopian meal.

Day 2: Koraro – Megab – Teka Tesfai

On the second day, after an early breakfast, the trek continues northeast as you leave the Gheralta cluster and move into more remote terrain. The trail ascends gradually through highland plateaus, narrow gorges, and greener landscapes dotted with acacia trees and small farms. You pass shepherd huts, rural homes, and streams, offering a glimpse into everyday life in the Tigrayan highlands. After stopping in Megab for lunch, the journey continues to Teka Tesfai, a hilltop village near the Agame Highlands. You spend the night in a simple guesthouse or eco-lodge, sharing stories and a warm local meal with the community.

Day 3: Teka Tesfai – Agame Highlands – Adigrat

The final day begins with a steady climb into the Agame Highlands, one of the most scenic and ecologically rich areas of Tigray. The trail leads through montane forest patches and panoramic ridgelines, with possible visits to hidden ancient churches still active today. From the high points, you enjoy expansive views over the Tigrayan plateau and, on clear days, as far as the Danakil lowlands. After a picnic lunch on the trail, you descend gradually toward the town of Adigrat, where the trek concludes. From Adigrat, further travel can be arranged to Axum, Mekelle, or other destinations in northern Ethiopia.
