What To Expect

Day 1: Addis Ababa – Rift Valley Lakes – Wondo Genet Hot Springs – Hawassa

Depart Addis Ababa after breakfast, driving south into the Great Rift Valley. Our first exploration is at Abijatta-Shalla National Park, a paradise for birdwatchers where you will view massive flocks of lesser flamingos, pelicans, and African fish eagles. Continue through the forested hills to Wondo Genet to soak in natural, therapeutic thermal springs surrounded by primary tropical vegetation. Arrive in the lakeside city of Hawassa by evening.

Day 2: Sidama Coffee Forest Hiking & Lake Hawassa Sunset

Drive into the high-altitude, fertile highlands of Yirgalem within the Sidama Zone. Embark on a guided hike through ancient indigenous forests and local shade-grown coffee plantations to learn about the birthplace of global coffee culture. Return to Hawassa in the late afternoon to visit Amora Gedel for a stunning sunset over the water, viewing playful colobus and vervet monkeys along the shore before experiencing a traditional evening hyena feeding ritual.

Day 3: Hawassa Fish Market – Dorze Highlands – Arbaminch

Begin the morning alongside local fishermen at the bustling Hawassa Fish Market. From there, trace the Rift Valley highway south to Arbaminch before climbing high into the cool Guge Mountains. Tour a traditional Dorze village, famous for organic bamboo houses woven up to 12 meters high to resemble elephant heads. Witness fine cotton weaving demonstrations, sample flatbread made from the Enset (false banana) root, and participate in an energetic cultural dance before descending back to the lake plains.

Continue to the hills of Jinka to meet the Ari tribe, celebrated for their elaborate hairstyles, blacksmithing, and traditional pottery making, before exploring the ethnographic collections at the Jinka Museum.

Day 5: Mago National Park (Mursi Tribe) – Key Afer – Turmi

Cross the savannah plains of Mago National Park early this morning to encounter the famous Mursi tribe. Learn about their fierce warrior culture and the ancient tradition of clay lip and ear-plates worn by Mursi women. Drive south through Key Afer to Turmi, the territorial hub of the pastoralist Hamer tribe. Spend the late afternoon inside an authentic Hamer settlement, observing their copper-braided hairstyles and elaborate hide clothing. If local schedules permit, attend a spectacular pre-wedding Bull Jumping Ceremony.

Day 6: Omorate (Dassanech Tribe) – Karo River-Cliff Settlements – Turmi

Drive south to the frontier outpost of Omorate along the Kenyan border. Board a traditional wooden dugout boat to cross the Omo River and tour a semi-nomadic Dassanech village, learning about their creative jewelry and adaptive lifestyle. In the afternoon, venture to the dramatic cliffside village of Korcho to spend time with the Karo tribe, the smallest ethnic group in the valley and masters of intricate white chalk body art and facial painting.

Day 7: Turmi – Elbore Pastorialists – Lake Chamo Boat Cruise – Arbaminch

Begin your return overland drive toward the northern Rift Valley. Upon arrival in Arbaminch, immediately board a private motorboat for a deep-water cruise on Lake Chamo. Get up close with some of Africa’s largest Nile crocodiles, wallowing hippo pods, and predatory fish eagles.

Day 8: Arbaminch – Tiya Megalithic Stelae – Addis Ababa
