Day 2: Dalol – Erta Ale (Volcano)

After breakfast, your 5-Day Danakil Depression and Lalibela Tour continues to the fascinating Dalol Depression, 125 meters below sea level. This unique region is renowned for its striking, multicolored mineral formations and hydrothermal reactions. You will explore the surreal landscapes of Dalol, visit Lake Assal, and witness camel caravans transporting blocks of salt mined from the earth in a centuries-old tradition.

Following Dalol, you will drive towards Erta Ale, a shield volcano and one of Ethiopia’s most alluring attractions. The journey takes you across solidified lava fields and desert sands, passing through small Afar settlements along the way.

Upon arrival at the campsite, you will have an early dinner before embarking on a one-hour trek to the volcano’s summit. Under the dark night sky, you will witness the hypnotic display of molten lava churning within the crater. After spending time at the rim, you will return to the campsite to sleep under the stars.

Day 3: Erta Ale – Semera – Lalibela

Before dawn, visit the boiling lava lake once more to watch the fiery glow against the early morning sky. After breakfast, you will begin your journey back to Semera. This transit marks the midpoint of your 5-Day Danakil Depression and Lalibela Tour as you transition from the desert heat to the mountain air.

The return trip includes a drive via Afdera to Semera Airport, where you will take a short flight or pre-arranged transfer to Lalibela. Upon arrival in Lalibela, you will check into your hotel and enjoy a relaxing evening, preparing for the cultural wonders of the following day.

Day 4: Exploring the Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela

Today is dedicated to the spiritual heart of your 5-Day Danakil Depression and Lalibela Tour. After breakfast, you will begin your tour of the first group of six rock-hewn churches, including Bete Medhane Alem, the largest monolithic church in the world. These 12th-century structures are carved directly into the red volcanic tuff and remain active places of worship.

In the afternoon, you will visit the second group of churches, culminating in the most famous of them all: Bete Giyorgis (the Church of St. George). Carved in the shape of a cross, it stands as a masterpiece of Ethiopian engineering. You will witness the intricate tunnels and trenches that connect these sacred sites, followed by a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony in the evening.

Overnight: Hotel in Lalibela

Day 5: Lalibela – Addis Ababa (Departure)
