What To Expect

Day 1: Semera – Erta Ale Volcano

  • Morning flight to Semera.
  • Meet your guide and driver; enjoy tea/coffee and a short trip briefing.

  • Drive (~6 hours) to Erta Ale, with a stop in Afdera for lunch and a float in the salt lake.

  • Continue to Dodom and set up camp at the base of the volcano.

  • After an early dinner, hike (~30 mins) to the caldera to witness the dramatic glow of molten lava.

  • Overnight: Camping under the stars near the rim of Erta Ale.

Day 2: Erta Ale – Hamad Ela

  • Pre-dawn hike to the crater for a sunrise view of the lava lake.
  • Return to camp for breakfast.

  • Drive (~5–6 hours) to Hamad Ela, with stops to see:

    • Traditional Afar salt miners

    • Salt mounds and small salt lakes

Day 3: Dallol – Mekele

Day 5: Enaf – Gohagot Valley – Shimbreyti

  • Full-day (~6 hours) trek across Gohagot Valley.

Day 6: Shimbreyti – Muzeity – Gheralta

Day 7: Gheralta – Mekele – Fly to Addis Ababa

Day 9: Turmi – Karo & Dassanech Villages
