Your journey begins with a pick-up from Mekele Airport or your hotel, followed by a two-hour drive to Agoro. The trek starts with a flat walk before ascending 600 meters through stunning highland scenery. After approximately three hours of trekking, you will reach Anaf Guesthouse at an altitude of 3,000 meters.
Overnight: Siheta Guesthouse
After breakfast, you will trek across the vast valley of Gohagot, immersing yourself in the daily lives of local farmers. This route offers a chance to spot Gelada baboons, an endemic Ethiopian primate species. The day concludes at the Erar Community Guesthouse, where you will experience authentic village hospitality.
Overnight: Gohagot Guesthouse
The morning trek follows the escarpment before descending into the picturesque Degamba Valley. You will visit Mariam Buzuhan, a fascinating rock-hewn church, and explore an ancient man-made rock tunnel. As you ascend once more, keep an eye out for the resident Gelada baboons before reaching Shimbreyti Community Guesthouse.
Overnight: Erar Guesthouse
After breakfast, you will descend from the mountains, passing through rural villages before meeting your driver. The journey continues with a one-hour drive to the Gheralta Mountains, home to Ethiopia’s legendary rock-hewn churches. After lunch, you can opt for an afternoon excursion to visit Maryam Korkor or Abuna Yemata Guh, both of which offer incredible history and breathtaking views.
