What To Expect

Day 1: Fly from Addis Ababa to Semera – Drive to Hamed Ela

In the morning, take a domestic flight from Addis Ababa to Semera. Upon arrival, drive approximately 5–6 hours to Hamed Ela.

Stop at Lake Afdera for lunch and a swim in the warm salt-rich waters. In the evening, visit Lake Asale to enjoy the vast salt flats and stunning sunset views while relaxing with a drink.

Overnight: Camping at Saba River under the stars.

Day 2: Dalol – Erta Ale Volcano Trek

After breakfast, drive to Dalol, one of the lowest places on Earth at -125 meters. Explore the vibrant sulfur formations, visit Lake Assal, and watch camel caravans transporting salt in the traditional Afar style.

Later, drive approximately 4 hours to Erta Ale volcano, crossing lava fields and desert terrain. At the base camp, rest and enjoy an early dinner. At sunset, take a short trek to the crater to witness the mesmerizing boiling lava lake, then return to camp to sleep under the stars.

Overnight: Basic camping at Erta Ale Base Camp.

Day 3: Erta Ale – Semera – Fly to Addis Ababa

Early morning, revisit the lava lake to experience its glowing spectacle in daylight. Drive to Afdera and, if time allows, enjoy a swim in the saltwater lake.

Continue driving approximately 5 hours to Semera Airport for your domestic flight back to Addis Ababa.

Day 4: Addis Ababa City Tour & Departure

Explore Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, founded in 1886 by Emperor Menelik II at an elevation of 2,438 meters. Visit the National Museum, home to the ancient hominid “Lucy”, and the Holy Trinity Cathedral, final resting place of Emperor Haile Selassie.

After your tour, transfer to Bole International Airport for departure.
