Overview

A Journey into Ethiopia’s Sacred Stone City

This 2-day tour takes you to the heart of Ethiopia’s spiritual and historical heritage: Lalibela — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to one of the world’s greatest architectural wonders. Often referred to as the “New Jerusalem,” Lalibela is famed for its 11 medieval rock-hewn churches, carved directly into solid volcanic rock in the 12th century. But beyond the stone lies a living tradition — a place where faith still pulses through the walls, chants echo through the air, and time seems to stand still.

Your journey begins with a scenic flight from Addis Ababa to Lalibela, followed by guided visits to both the Northern and Eastern Church clusters, including masterpieces like Bete Medhane Alem, the world’s largest monolithic church, and Bete Giyorgis (St. George) — the iconic cross-shaped church carved into a deep trench.

Along the way, you’ll walk cobbled paths lined with white-robed pilgrims, listen to ancient liturgical chants, and gain insight into the deep symbolism, engineering marvels, and enduring faith that make Lalibela one of the most remarkable spiritual sites on Earth.

Highlights:

  • Explore all 11 UNESCO-listed rock-hewn churches, carved entirely by hand

  • Visit Bete Giyorgis, the most iconic and photogenic of Lalibela’s churches
