What To Expect

Day 1: Wonchi Lake – Crater Lake Adventure

Route: Addis Ababa – Woliso – Wonchi Lake – Addis Ababa
Overnight: Negash Lodge (Woliso)

Morning

  • Depart early from Addis Ababa (around 6:30 AM) for a scenic drive westward through Woliso town.

  • The drive to Wonchi Lake takes approximately 3.5 to 4 hours.

  • Arrive at Wonchi Lake, a breathtaking crater lake nestled between verdant hills at over 2,900 meters above sea level.

Activities

  • Begin a guided hike or horseback ride down the crater walls, taking in stunning views of the lake, surrounding gorges, waterfalls, and local farms.

  • Enjoy a traditional wooden boat ride across the lake to Cherkos Monastery, located on an island and believed to date back to the 13th century.

  • Visit nearby natural hot springs and gain insights into the local Gurage and Oromo cultures with the help of your local guide.

Lunch

Afternoon

  • Hike or ride back up to the crater rim.

Day 2: Menagesha Suba Forest – Ethiopia’s Oldest State Forest

Route: Woliso – Menagesha Suba Forest – Addis Ababa
Overnight: Optional (Addis Ababa or onward travel)

Morning

  • After breakfast, depart for Menagesha Suba Forest, located approximately 2 to 2.5 hours away.

  • This is one of Ethiopia’s oldest and most ecologically rich protected forests.

Activities

  • Enjoy a guided forest hike along well-marked trails, with options ranging from short loops to more strenuous ascents.

  • Encounter diverse flora and fauna, including:
    Menelik’s bushbuck – an endangered, endemic antelope.
    ▪ Colobus monkeys, baboons, and a variety of forest birds.
    ▪ Towering indigenous trees such as juniper, podocarpus, and Hagenia.
