Experience the ultimate ecological odyssey through one of Africa’s premier high-altitude wilderness destinations. This Bale Mountains Trekking Tour is a professionally guided expedition that traverses the full diversity of Ethiopia’s highland habitats—from misty juniper woodlands and Afro-alpine moorlands to the sprawling Sanetti Plateau and the lush Harenna rainforest. Designed for wildlife enthusiasts and intrepid hikers, this Bale Mountains Trekking Tour offers unparalleled opportunities to encounter the world’s rarest canid, the Ethiopian Wolf, alongside the endemic Mountain Nyala, Bale Monkey, and Giant Mole-rat. Discover the “Roof of Africa” with seamless all-inclusive logistics and expert-led mountain guidance.
Your expedition begins with a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Robe. Upon arrival, you will meet your trekking team and transfer to the Dinsho Headquarters. Following a briefing and an Ethiopian coffee ceremony, we embark on an introductory acclimatization hike. This area of beautiful juniper woodland is the best place to spot the majestic Mountain Nyala, Menelik’s Bushbuck, and endemic birds like the Abyssinian Catbird. Overnight: Dinsho Campsite (3,100m).
After breakfast, we begin an 18km trek (6–7 hours) into the heart of the wilderness. We traverse the scenic Web Valley to reach the Fincha Habera Waterfall, where the Web and Wolla rivers converge. This is our first major opportunity to spot the Ethiopian Wolf in its natural habitat. Enjoy the vast open landscapes and the sighting of endemic waterfowl like the Blue-winged Goose. Overnight: Habera Campsite (3,500m).
We continue our Bale Mountains Trekking Tour with an 18km journey through the dramatic Mararo Valley. As we gain altitude, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged and ethereal. This section is excellent for spotting high-altitude raptors, including the Lammergeyer and Verreaux’s Eagle. Keep a keen eye on the ridges for Ethiopian Wolves patrolling the moorlands. Overnight: Wasema Campsite (3,900m).
Today we summit the Sanetti Plateau, the highest plateau in Africa. This 7–8 hour trek explores the Worgona Valley and traverses stunning Afro-alpine moorlands. The plateau is a surreal landscape of alpine lakes, giant lobelias, and volcanic rock. It remains the most reliable location on earth for Ethiopian Wolf sightings and serves as a vital sanctuary for rare falcons and eagles. Overnight: Sanetti Campsite (4,100m).
We descend the escarpment into the Harenna Forest, Ethiopia’s second-largest tropical forest. After a short drive, we take a guided walk through bamboo thickets and waterfalls to spot the endemic Bale Monkey. We then transfer to Robe Airport for your return flight to Addis Ababa, concluding your comprehensive trek across all major Bale habitats.
