Day One: Semera – Hamed Ela

Begin your journey with a flight from Addis Ababa to Semera. Upon arrival, embark on a 5-6 hour drive to Hamed Ela. Along the way, take a break at the beautiful Lake Afdera for lunch, with an option to enjoy a refreshing swim. In the evening, arrive at the camping village of Hamed Ela. Experience the breathtaking Lake Asale with its expansive salt flats, where you can swim in the salt lake and unwind with a glass of wine or beer amidst stunning scenery.

Overnight: Open-air camping at Hamed Ela.

Day Two: Dalol – Erta Ale (Volcano)

After breakfast, drive to the mesmerizing Dalol, situated 125 meters below sea level. Explore the vibrant landscapes formed by volcanic activity, including Dallol’s colorful salt formations, Lake Assal, and the iconic camel caravans. Witness the traditional salt mining process in one of the lowest places on Earth.

Continue your journey to Erta Ale, renowned as one of Ethiopia’s most captivating and physically demanding natural wonders. This shield volcano, with a base diameter of 30 km and a 1 km square caldera at its summit, boasts the world’s only permanent lava lake at an altitude of 613 meters. The 4-hour drive to Erta Ale takes you through an ever-changing landscape of solidified lava rocks and desert sands, passing through small, scattered hamlets.

Upon arrival at the Erta Ale campsite, take a short rest and enjoy an early dinner. Just before sunset, embark on a one-hour trek to the volcano’s summit. Spend the evening marveling at the mesmerizing, boiling lava lake before trekking back to the campsite to sleep under the stars.

Day Three: Erta Ale – Semera

Start your day with an early morning visit to the boiling lava lake for one last unforgettable view. After breakfast, drive for approximately 2 hours to Afdera. From Afdera, continue on an asphalt road for about 3.5 hours to reach Semera Airport for your departure.

What to Bring:

Torches for night walking
Small backpack for the trek to the volcano summit
Closed, comfortable trekking shoes
Swimming attire
Sun protection (sun cream, hat)
Jacket for the cool night on the volcano
