Your journey begins in Semera, the capital of the Afar region. From here, you will embark on a five-hour drive towards Dodom, a small settlement located at the base of Erta Ale. The route takes you across a dramatic and ever-changing landscape, passing through vast lava fields, sandy plains, and small Afar villages. Along the way, you will get a glimpse of the harsh yet beautiful environment that shapes the lives of the local communities.
Upon arrival in Dodom, you will enjoy an early dinner and prepare for the night trek to the summit of Erta Ale. Camels will transport camping equipment and supplies as you make your way to the crater’s rim. Erta Ale, often called the “Smoking Mountain,” is a shield volcano with a base diameter of 30km and a 1km-wide caldera. It is home to one of the world’s only permanent lava lakes, a mesmerizing sight best viewed under the night sky. As you stand at the crater’s edge, you will witness the fiery red glow of the bubbling lava, an unforgettable experience.
Overnight: Open-air camping at Erta Ale
At sunrise, you will have another chance to explore the crater of Erta Ale. The main pit, which is approximately 200 meters deep and 350 meters across, is a breathtaking sight in the morning light. You will walk along the rim, taking in the unique formations created by the flowing lava, before descending back to the campsite for breakfast.
After breakfast, you will drive to Lake Afdera, a striking saltwater lake set against the backdrop of the desert. Here, you will have the opportunity to swim in the warm, mineral-rich waters, a refreshing experience after your time in the volcanic landscape. The lake is also a vital resource for the local Afar people, who extract salt from its shores using traditional methods.
Following the visit to Lake Afdera, you will continue your journey back to Semera, where the tour concludes. You may choose to be dropped off at Semera Airport or your hotel, marking the end of an extraordinary adventure in one of Ethiopia’s most unique landscapes.
