What To Expect

Day 1: Addis Ababa ✈ Dire Dawa – Harar

Your expedition begins with a morning flight from the capital to Dire Dawa. Upon arrival, we drive to the ancient walled city of Harar. Our afternoon exploration includes visits to Arthur Rimbaud’s House, the Harari Museums, and the historic residence of Ras Mekonnen.

To conclude our first day, we participate in the legendary evening tradition: the hyena feeding spectacle, where local “hyena men” summon and feed these wild predators by hand at the city gates. Overnight: Royal Sunshine Hotel.

Day 2: Harar to Doho Lodge

We depart Harar for a scenic drive through the Chercher Mountains, stopping at sprawling coffee plantations and chat fields that characterize the region’s agriculture.

In the afternoon, we visit Awash National Park to witness the dramatic Awash River Gorge and its resident birdlife. We then continue to the tranquil Doho Lodge, where you can unwind in natural, palm-lined thermal pools under the stars. Overnight: Doho Lodge.

Day 3: Awash to Bale Mountains National Park

Following an early departure, we head south toward the Bale Mountains. After a local lunch in the town of Dodola, we reach the park headquarters at Dinsho for an afternoon hike.

This area is a prime habitat for spotting endemic species such as the Mountain Nyala and Menelik’s Bushbuck. As the sun sets, we arrive in Robe for our overnight stay. Overnight: Nu Robe Hotel.

Day 4: Sanetti Plateau to Lake Langano

Today we explore the high-altitude Sanetti Plateau, home to the world’s rarest canid, the Ethiopian Wolf. We will embark on a hike to the summit of Tullu Dimtu, Ethiopia’s second-highest peak, for breathtaking panoramic views of the Afro-alpine moorlands.

In the afternoon, we descend from the highlands to the shores of Lake Langano, the only Rift Valley lake safe for swimming. Overnight: Hara Langano Lodge.

Day 5: Langano to Semera (Danakil Gateway)

We continue our journey through the Great Rift Valley, passing a chain of spectacular lakes with an optional stop at Abijata-Shalla National Park to observe colonies of pink flamingos.

In the afternoon, we transfer to the airport for our flight to Semera, the gateway to the Danakil Depression, where our extreme adventure logistics begin. Overnight: Dawud Hamelo Hotel.

Day 6: Semera to Hamedela (Danakil Depression)

Our 4WD expedition enters the Danakil Depression, one of the lowest and hottest places on Earth. We reach the remote village of Hamedela, our base for exploring the salt desert.

The highlight of the day is sunset at Lake Asale, where we can walk across the vast salt flats and swim in buoyant, salty pools while watching Afar salt caravans pass by. Overnight: Camping at Hamedela.

Day 7: Dallol to Erta Ale Volcano

We spend the morning at Dallol, an extraordinary geothermal field featuring vibrant sulfur springs, acid pools, and mineral formations in surreal neon colors.

In the afternoon, we drive across the lava desert to the base camp of Erta Ale. As night falls, we trek to the crater rim to witness the raw power of one of the world’s few continuously active lava lakes. Overnight: Camping near the crater rim.

Day 8: Erta Ale to Mekele

After a final sunrise viewing of the glowing lava lake, we descend the volcano and drive toward the Tigrayan highlands.

We stop at the salt lake of Afdira before arriving in Mekele, the capital of the Tigray region, where we can enjoy a well-deserved evening of comfort. Overnight: Planet Hotel.

Day 9: Mekele to Gheralta Highlands

We drive into the stunning Gheralta region, famous for its towering sandstone spires. Today’s cultural exploration includes the rock-hewn masterpieces of Abraha Atsbeha, Wukro Chirkos, and the Medhane Alem Kesho churches.

The ancient architecture and serene mountain settings provide a spiritual introduction to the Historic North. Overnight: Gheralta Lodge.

Day 10: Gheralta to Axum

For the adventurous, the morning offers an optional trek to Abune Yemata Guh, a spectacular cliffside church. We then pass through the historic Adwa Battlefield, where Ethiopia defended its independence in 1896.

Our day concludes with a visit to the ancient Temple of Yeha, dating back to the 7th century BC, before arriving in Axum. Overnight: Atrons Hotel.

Day 11: Axum Full Day Exploration

We spend a full day in the holiest city of Ethiopia. We visit the towering Obelisks of Axum, the Queen of Sheba’s Palace, and the Church of St. Mary of Zion—the reputed home of the Ark of the Covenant.

The archaeological museum provides deep context into Axum’s significance as one of the four great empires of the ancient world. Overnight: Atrons Hotel.

Day 12: Axum to Simien Mountains National Park

Today features one of Ethiopia’s most scenic drives as we cross the Tekeze River Gorge to reach the Simien Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In the late afternoon, we take a short walk to encounter friendly Gelada Baboons, often referred to as “Bleeding Heart Monkeys,” grazing in large family groups. Overnight: Simien Lodge.

Day 13: Simien Mountains to Gondar

We enjoy a morning trek to the spectacular Jinbar Waterfalls, which drop vertically into a deep chasm. The mountain vistas here are among the most dramatic in Africa.

After taking in the views, we descend from the highlands and drive to the imperial city of Gondar, the “Camelot of Africa.” Overnight: Gondar Hills Resort.

Day 14: Bahir Dar & Lake Tana Monasteries

We travel south to Bahir Dar, situated on the shores of Lake Tana. We embark on a private boat trip to explore the lake’s hidden island monasteries, such as Ura Kidane Mehret, famous for their vibrant 16th-century ecclesiastical murals.

Day 16: Gondar ✈ Lalibela

A short flight brings us to Lalibela, the “New Jerusalem.” We begin our exploration of the first group of rock-hewn churches, marveling at the engineering required to carve these structures downward into solid volcanic rock.

The day culminates at the iconic, cross-shaped Church of St. George (Bet Giyorgis). Overnight: Mezena Lodge.

Day 17: Lalibela Culture & Hidden Churches

In the morning, we visit the bustling Lalibela Market to witness traditional trade. Afterward, you may choose to hike to the mountain monastery of Asheton Maryam or take a scenic drive to the cave church of Yemrehanna Kristos.
