Crater Lake Serenity, Volcanic Landscapes & Hidden Monasteries
This 2-day getaway offers a refreshing escape to one of Ethiopia’s most breathtaking natural wonders — Lake Wonchi, a volcanic crater lake tucked high in the Oromia highlands west of Addis Ababa. Known for its stunning blue waters, lush green caldera, and tranquil atmosphere, Lake Wonchi is the perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and light adventure.
Your journey begins with a scenic drive through rolling hills, farmlands, and forested plateaus before reaching Wonchi Crater, sitting at over 3,000 meters above sea level. From there, you’ll hike or ride horseback down into the crater, passing waterfalls, eucalyptus groves, and local villages along the way.
At the lake’s edge, enjoy a boat ride to an island monastery, where ancient traditions and serene spirituality are still alive. Whether you’re sipping coffee by the lakeside, soaking in panoramic views, or engaging with friendly locals, Lake Wonchi offers a peaceful, soul-soothing experience.
