What To Expect

Day 1: Sunday | Arrival in Asmara – City Tour

Your journey begins on Day 1 with your arrival in Asmara, the charming capital city of Eritrea. Spend the day adjusting to the altitude and exploring the city’s impressive collection of modernist Italian architecture, including the Fiat Tagliero Building, the Cathedral of Asmara, and the art deco cinemas. Stroll through Harnet Avenue and enjoy a traditional Eritrean coffee ceremony in one of the many local cafés.

Day 2: Monday | Excursion to Keren and Return to Asmara

On Day 2, dive deeper into Asmara’s cultural and historical attractions. Visit the National Museum of Eritrea, the Medebar Market, and the Tank Graveyard to understand the country’s complex history. If operating, you can also take a ride on the vintage steam train that winds through the mountainsa rare and unforgettable experience offering panoramic views of the highlands.

Day 3: Tuesday | Asmara to Massawa

Day 3 takes you east through the dramatic descent of the Eastern Escarpment to the Red Sea coast. The drive to Massawa offers stunning scenery as you move from the highlands to the lowlands. Once in Massawa, explore the old town with its blend of Ottoman, Egyptian, and Italian architecture. Wander its narrow alleyways, visit the Imperial Palace and the historic mosques, and enjoy fresh seafood by the sea.

Days 4–5: Wensday and Thursday Dahlak Islands (Dissie & Madote)

On Day 4, take a boat trip from Massawa to the Dahlak Archipelago, one of the Red Sea’s hidden gems. Spend the day island-hopping, snorkeling in crystal clear waters, and experiencing the peaceful, untouched beauty of these remote islands. If available, you can also visit one of the inhabited islands to meet the Afar communities and learn about their traditional lifestyle.

Return to Massawa on Day 5 and make your way back to Asmara. On the drive up, stop at the town of Ghinda for a short break, or take a detour through the lush Filfil rainforest, known for its rich birdlife and scenic views. Arrive in Asmara by evening and enjoy a relaxed dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 6: Friday | Massawa Free Day

Day 6 is reserved for a full-day excursion to Keren, a picturesque town nestled in the highlands northwest of Asmara. Visit the vibrant Monday camel market if your trip coincides, explore the Italian and British war cemeteries, and see the unique Mariam Dearit shrine built into a baobab tree. Keren offers a slower pace and a fascinating look into the blend of cultures in Eritrea.

Day 7: Saturday | Massawa – Asmara – Departure

On Day 7, spend your final morning in Asmara with some leisure time for shopping at the local markets or visiting any sites you may have missed. Depending on your flight schedule, enjoy one last traditional meal and tae in the relaxed atmosphere of the city before heading to the airport for your departure.
