  • Duration: 2 Days
  • Language: English

Overview

This compact 2 Day Dallol Tour from Mekele brings you face-to-face with the psychedelic geothermal fields of Dallol, where neon-yellow sulfur springs and crystalline acid pools create a kaleidoscopic world found nowhere else. You will witness the incredible resilience and watch the legendary golden sunset stretch across the horizon. From the mirror-like salt flats of Lake Asale at sunset to the ancient, rhythmically carved salt canyons, this tour offers a profound glimpse into a raw, geological wonderland that feels like another planet.

What To Expect

Day 1: Mekele to Hamedela and Lake Asale

Your expedition begins in Mekele, where you will meet your team and board 4×4 Land Cruisers. You will drive from the high-altitude greenery of Tigray down into the Afar lowlands.

In the afternoon, you will arrive at the desert outpost of Hamedela. From here, you will drive to the vast salt flats of Lake Asale. Experience a spectacular sunset where the shallow water creates a perfect mirror on the ground.

Overnight: Hamedela (basic camping on traditional Afar beds)

Day 2: Dallol Geothermal Field and Return to Mekele

After an early breakfast, you will drive to Dallol, the lowest and hottest place on Earth. You will explore the surreal, kaleidoscopic landscape of neon-yellow sulfur springs, bubbling acid pools, and salt towers.

The tour continues to the salt canyons and to the salty swimming pond. Following a local lunch, you will begin the 3–4 hour ascent back to the highlands. You will arrive in Mekele in the late afternoon, concluding your journey.
