What To Expect

Morning: Scenic Highlands & Crater Descent

Departing Addis Ababa at 7:30 AM, we drive west through the fertile farmlands of the Oromia region. Upon arrival at the Wenchi rim, we begin our descent into the 4km-wide caldera. You can choose to hike through the lush afro-alpine vegetation or take a traditional horseback ride down the winding trails. Along the way, we pass traditional Oromo farmsteads and witness the unique highland flora that thrives in this microclimate.

Midday: Island Monastery & Lakeside Exploration

Once at the lakeshore, we take a traditional boat across the crystal-clear waters to visit the 13th-century Wenchi Kirkos island monastery. This secluded spiritual site offers a rare glimpse into the medieval history of the region. After exploring the island, we enjoy a traditional Ethiopian picnic or a local highland meal by the water’s edge, surrounded by the towering walls of the volcanic crater.

Afternoon: Hot Springs & Return Journey

Our afternoon includes a visit to the natural hot springs and a hike through the indigenous forests toward the Fincha waterfalls. For those seeking panoramic views, we visit the Emogil viewpoint to capture the scale of the volcanic lake before beginning our ascent back to the rim. We depart Wenchi in the late afternoon, arriving back in Addis Ababa by approximately 7:00 PM.
