11 DAYS – LALIBELA, AXUM, DANAKIL

Addis – Lalibela

Depart on an early morning flight to Lalibela (08:00), visit the most famous of all of the Ethiopian historical sites.  After you check in your hotel, you will start your tour of the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, visiting the Northwestern Cluster of churches – Bet Medhane Alem, Bet Maryam, Bet Meskel, Bet Danaghel, Bet Mikael & Bet Golgotha (entry not permitted for women). Overnight O/N  cliff age hotel

Fly from Lalibela- Gondar

After a relaxing breakfast the drver will transfer you to airport, fly from lalibela to Gondar.  After briefly settling in your hotel, explore the sites of Gondar, including a visit to the Royal Enclosure, with six castles and several other buildings.  Additionally, visit Fasilidas’s Pool, still used for Timket celebrations today, Ras Gimb Palace. Museum and the Debre Birhan Selassie church , with the most famous ceiling in Ethiopia. Over night at fasil lodge

Gondar to simien mountain ( sankabar campsite)

Today is an early morning departure to Sankober in The Simien Mountains , and from here you will go for an easy hike to the Geech Abyss , where you will see a large waterfall as the Jinbar River plunges into the abyss. This area is also a great place for viewing the endemic gelada baboon , also known as the ‘Bleeding Heart Baboon’, after the red patch of skin on its chest.  Overnight in The Simien Mountains (camping)

Sankabar – Axum

Today after a short trek around the camp, you will drive for about 7 hrs drive to Axum.  enjoying spectacular views of TheSimien Mountains on the way.

After stopping for lunch in Adi Arkay , we’ll proceedthrough the dramatic Tekeze Valley , which offers some of the best landscapes in the country. After this, we proceed to Axum , home of the ancient Axumite Empire ,The Queen of Sheba , and The Ark of the Covenant . Overnight in Axum (Ethiopis Hotel).

Short visit in Axum and 3 hrs Drive to Erar community guest house.

Axum to Erar community guest house.

Visit the rest attractions of axum ( Today you will be visiting the sites of Axum, including the famous obelisks (including one that was recently erected after being returned from Italy), the archeological museum , )and drive for about 2:30 hrs to Trek start (Rahiya) and trek for 2 hrs to erar community guest house. Over night at Erar simple community guest house.

TREK ERAR TO SHIMBREYTI (4-5 HRS, 2800M)

Day Notes: After breakfast walk the escarpment for awhile before gently descending to the beautiful Valley of Degamba Village. Ascend again visiting Mariam Buzuhan rock hewn church and a very old manmade rock tunnel on the way.  Overnight at Shimbreyti Community Guest house. While here, make sure to search for the resident Gelada baboons.

TREK SHIMBREYTI TO MUZITEY (2 HRS). DRIVE TO GHERALTA (1 HR)

After breakfast, trek for two to three hrs, first descending from the mountain to the flats of the valley where the trail takes you through rural villages before meeting your pickup vehicle.

Drive for about an hour to Gheralta   you will visit one churche; Abuna Yemata Guh. To visit Abuna Yemata Guh, walking for about an hour to commence a steep ascent up the side of the Gheralta massif. This steep ascent soon turn into a climb using foot holds and hand holds chipped into the sandstone rock by the passage of many hands and feet.

The climb and the walk along very narrow ledges with sheer drops to the side is not one for the faint hearted. The church itself can be reached by walking out on a ledge one meter wide and with a 200m drop to the left hand side. At the entrance there is a small cave and a wooden door built into the rock O/ n at Gheralta lodge

Gheralta- mariam korkor- Mekele

Today, you will hike for about 3 hrs round trip to visit mariam korkor and Daniel korkor. after lunch, you will drive to mekele for about 2 hrs. over night at Genfel hotel.

Mekele- Artale (volcano)

We start our day by driving to Erta Ale (which means smoky mountain in Afar language). Erta Ale ranks one of the most alluring and physically challenging natural attractions anywhere in Ethiopia. It is a shield volcano with a base diameter of 30 km and 1km square caldera at its summit.

Erta Ale contains the world’s only permanent lava lake. It is 613 meters, with a lava lake, one of only five in the world, at the summit. It is notable for being the longest existing lava lake, present since the early years of the twentieth century. We start early 9:00 AM, drive to Askoma (at the base of Erta Ale). This is may be one of the roughest roads in the world. The 247 km distance may take about 6 hrs passing through changing landscape of solidified lava, rock, sand and occasional palm lined oasis. After passing several small hamlets scattered here and there in this deserted land, you will arrive to Askoma camping site, located about 9 km from Erta Ale.

Dinner will be served around 17:00 o’clock. After a short break, trek up to Ertale at 20:00 hours. Camels will be transporting all the camping materials and some food (sleeping materials like light mattresses and mat and water) to the rim of the volcano, where we spend the night watching the dramatic action of the boiling lava. You will spend the night on top of the mountain, at the rim of the Volcano. over night  open air camping

Ertale – Hamedela

Early Morning sun rise at the northern one corresponds to the main pit crater. Artale is, is 65 m wide and about 100 m deep. Descend from Erta Ale around 6:30 am and walk down to Askoma for about 2 hrs.You will reach latest at 9:00 o’clock at the camp, where you will have breakfast and as soon as possible, drive about 6-7 hrs to reach Hamed ela (the next camping village ) .

When time permits, in this evening we will visit lake asale with sunset and camel caravans or visit morning sunrise and camel caravans. over night open air camping

Danakil to Mekele- and fly to Addis

Morning tour Drive to Ragad (Asebo), the place where the localities are mining salt. Look the activity of workers breaking salts from the ground, cutting in to rectangular pieces and loading on camels.

You drive ahead to Dallol and visit the difference landscape formed by volcanic activity, Dallol + Lake Assal + camel caravans. Excursion to Dallol (116 meter below sea level, one of the lowest places in the world) colorful salts mining, visit Lake Assal, follow up camel caravans and walk with the Afar people.

Drive back to Hamedela and proceed to mekele and flying to Addis in the evening.
