Overview

Journey into the ancient green heart of Ethiopia on this curated nature and hiking excursion. This Menagesha Suba Forest Day Trip is professionally designed for travelers seeking a pristine wilderness escape just 45 km west of Addis Ababa. Originally protected by Emperor Zara Yaqob in the 15th century, Menagesha Suba is recognized as one of the oldest conservation areas in Africa. Home to towering Juniper and Hagenia trees, some over 400 years old, the forest is a sanctuary for endemic wildlife and rare bird species. Whether you are trekking to the 3,380-meter volcanic peak of Mount Moges or spotting the endemic Menelik’s Bushbuck, this Menagesha Suba Forest Day Trip provides a refreshing and historic encounter with Ethiopia’s natural heritage.

What To Expect

Morning: Arrival & Highland Forest Trekking

Departing Addis Ababa at 8:00 AM, we drive west through the scenic outskirts toward the foothills of the Menagesha mountains. Upon arrival, we begin our guided trek through the dense indigenous forest. As we ascend the trails, we walk under a canopy of ancient Juniper (Juniperus procera) and African Redwood. Along the way, we keep a keen eye out for the endemic Menelik’s Bushbuck and the playful Colobus monkeys that inhabit the high branches.

Midday: Summit Views & Nature Picnic

For active hikers, we continue to the summit of Mount Moges (3,380m) for panoramic views of the surrounding Oromia highlands and the capital in the distance. After the descent, we enjoy a curated nature picnic or a traditional lunch at a local forest lodge. This is a perfect time to enjoy the crisp mountain air and the tranquility of the forest, away from the city’s hustle.

Afternoon: Birdwatching & Return Journey

The afternoon is dedicated to exploring the lower trails, ideal for birdwatching. Menagesha is home to rare species including the Abyssinian Catbird and the Banded Barbet. We visit the historic royal nursery before beginning our relaxed return drive. We arrive back in Addis Ababa by approximately 5:30 PM, concluding a day of deep ecological immersion.
