Experience a seamless transition from the savannah to the “Fourth Holy City of Islam” with expert-led logistics and authentic cultural encounters on this comprehensive Awash National Park and Harar Tour.
Departing from Addis Ababa, we drive east through the dramatic landscapes of the Great Rift Valley toward Awash National Park. Upon arrival, we check into the Doho Lodge, famous for its natural hot spring pools overlooking the palm-fringed wetlands. In the afternoon, we embark on our first game drive across the Illala Sala Plains, where we frequently spot Beisa Oryx, Soemmerring’s Gazelles, Warthogs, and the endemic Swayne’s Hartebeest. Overnight: Doho Lodge.
Spend a full day immersing yourself in the ecological wonders of Ethiopia’s oldest national park. We begin with an early morning game drive to catch predators and birdlife at their most active. After a midday break to enjoy the lodge’s therapeutic hot springs, we visit the spectacular Awash Falls. Here, the Awash River thunders into a deep gorge, offering breathtaking viewpoints and excellent birdwatching opportunities. Overnight: Doho Lodge.
After breakfast, we continue the Awash National Park and Harar Tour with a scenic 6-7 hour drive toward the ancient city of Harar. As we ascend into the Chercher Mountains, the landscape shifts to lush coffee and khat plantations. Upon arrival in Harar, we enter the “Jugol” (the old walled city) for a short orientation tour. The evening concludes with Harar’s most famous tradition: the Hyena Feeding ritual, where you can witness the extraordinary bond between the city’s residents and wild hyenas. Overnight: Harar.
Our final morning is dedicated to a deep exploration of Harar’s 82 mosques and 102 shrines. We visit traditional Harari homes, the historic Arthur Rimbaud House, and the vibrant spice markets that give the city its unique character. After a traditional Harari lunch, we drive to Dire Dawa for an afternoon flight back to Addis Ababa, concluding your journey through Ethiopia’s eastern highlights.
