What To Expect

Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa

Welcome to the historic capital of Ethiopia. Upon arrival at Bole International Airport, you will be met by our professional team and transferred to your hotel.

Our afternoon city tour explores the diverse heritage of Addis Ababa, including a visit to the National Museum—home to the famous “Lucy” fossil—the Holy Trinity Cathedral, and the Ethnological Museum. We conclude the day with a traditional Ethiopian dinner at a cultural restaurant, featuring live music and dance performances from across the country.

Day 2: Addis Ababa to Arba Minch

We depart the capital and fly to Arba Minch, the gateway to the southern Rift Valley. In the afternoon, we ascend the Chencha Mountains to visit the Dorze village.

You will witness their world-renowned weaving traditions and unique bamboo beehive huts, which can reach up to 12 meters in height. The evening is spent relaxing at your hotel, offering spectacular panoramic views of Lake Chamo and Lake Abaya.

Day 3: Nechisar National Park & Lake Chamo

The morning begins with an exploration of Nechisar National Park, starting with a private boat trip on Lake Chamo. This “crocodile market” provides up-close encounters with massive Nile crocodiles, hippos, and a variety of waterfowl.

In the afternoon, we embark on a game drive across the “Bridge of God” plains to spot Burchell’s zebras, Swayne’s hartebeests, and Grant’s gazelles against a stunning mountain backdrop.

Day 4: Arba Minch to Konso

We drive south to Konso, a UNESCO World Heritage site celebrated for its ancient stone-walled terraces and fortified villages.

Our afternoon is dedicated to exploring the Konso Cultural Landscape. You will learn about their unique social structures, the “Waga” funerary statues, and the generational “generation poles” that mark the history of these resilient highland farmers. Overnight in a local lodge.

Day 5: Konso to Jinka

Our journey enters the heart of the Omo Valley as we depart for Jinka. Along the way, we stop at the vibrant Key Afer market (scheduled on Thursdays), where the Banna, Ari, and Hamar tribes gather to trade.

Upon arrival in Jinka, we visit the South Omo Research Center and Museum to gain deep anthropological insights into the diverse ethnic groups we will encounter in the coming days.

Day 6: Mago National Park and Mursi Tribe

An early morning drive takes us into Mago National Park to meet the Mursi people. The Mursi are globally recognized for the elaborate clay lip plates worn by the women and their intricate body scarification.

We engage with the community to learn about their ancestral customs and nomadic lifestyle. In the afternoon, we return to Jinka to explore the local market and interact with the town’s diverse residents.

Day 7: Jinka to Turmi

We drive to Turmi, the central hub of the Hamar people. Known for their intricate ochre-colored hair twists and elaborate beaded leather clothing, the Hamar are among the most welcoming tribes in the valley.

In the afternoon, we visit a local village to learn about their “Evangadi” night dancing and social rituals. If scheduled, we may have the rare opportunity to witness a sacred bull-jumping ceremony.

Day 8: Turmi and Omorate

Today we travel further south to Omorate, situated near the banks of the Omo River. We cross the river by traditional dugout canoe to visit the Dassanech tribe, observing their unique semi-nomadic village life near the Kenyan border.

In the afternoon, we return to Turmi to visit the bustling local market, a focal point for the Hamar and Karo communities to exchange goods and news.

Day 9: Turmi to Yabelo

We depart for Yabelo, crossing the territory of the Erbore and Borena tribes. The Erbore are known for their distinct jewelry and colorful head coverings.

In the afternoon, we reach Yabelo to visit the “Singing Wells.” Here, Borena pastoralists form human chains to haul water from deep wells for their livestock, singing rhythmic songs that keep the pace of the arduous work. Overnight in Yabelo.

Day 10: Yabelo to Awassa

Our route turns north toward the lakeside city of Awassa. Situated on the shores of Lake Awassa, the city offers a tropical Rift Valley atmosphere.

We visit the famous morning fish market, where local fishermen bring in their catch amidst a flurry of activity and spectacular lakeside birdlife. We conclude the day with a relaxing boat ride on the lake to spot hippos.

Day 11: Awassa to Harar

We transition to the eastern highlands as we travel to the ancient city of Harar. After settling into the “walled city” atmosphere, we begin our exploration of Harar’s winding alleyways.

The evening features one of Ethiopia’s most famous traditions: the Hyena Man of Harar. You will witness the unique spectacle of wild hyenas being summoned and fed by hand, a practice that has existed in harmony with the city for generations.

Day 12: Harar Jugol Exploration

A full day is dedicated to Harar Jugol, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the fourth holiest city in Islam. We explore the 16th-century walls, the Arthur Rimbaud Museum, and several of the city’s 82 ancient mosques.

The afternoon is spent in the vibrant Harar markets, famous for high-quality coffee and intricate textiles. We conclude the day enjoying authentic Harari cuisine at a traditional home.

Day 13: Harar to Addis Ababa

We begin our return journey to Addis Ababa. Upon arrival in the capital, you will have free time for last-minute souvenir shopping at the Merkato or to revisit sites of interest.

In the evening, we gather for a grand farewell dinner at a cultural restaurant, celebrating the end of our expedition with traditional music and a final taste of authentic Ethiopian hospitality.

Day 14: Departure

Following a final Ethiopian coffee ceremony, our team transfers you to Bole International Airport for your international departure. This 14-day expedition concludes with a wealth of memories from the soul-stirring landscapes and living traditions of South and East Ethiopia.
